Combat styles in RuneScape. Mages.

The Magic combat styles is used by Mages. They are sometimes also named Sorcerers. The Magic style is something very unpleasant for warriors and an easy target for archers, i.e. Magic is good against the Melee combat style and loses to the Ranged style.

The Mages' main weapon are staves. And for defense they use robes which obviously don't represent a very strong defensive layer. However, it's not the armor and not the physical aspect of the weapon - the stoves - that make mages strong and powerfull - it's the spells they have. Those spells come from stones - runes - that contain magical energy which deals damage to their targets.

The subclasses (sub-styles) of this combat style include the Ancient Mages and Wizards - combat subclasses, and Lunar Mages - non combat subclass, i.e. most of the spells of this type are used for non combat actions and effects. The subclasses are classified so based on the type of magicks (sets of spells) the players' characters use – respectively ancient spells, modern spells and lunar spells.
One of the main abilities the Mages are known for is the ability to reduce the enemies' speed by binding them into a square area for a period of time – shortly, no escape from Sorcerers.

Mages are good as a combat style for certain mini-games available in RuneScape (e.g. Fist of Guthix - as Mages are able to immobilize targets which is essential for the mini-game); also Mages are useful for group activities thanks to some of the skills that are available for them, e.g. the ability to heal.
